CBD, a “cannabinoid” found in cannabis, has been used for centuries to treat a variety of health concerns. The study of marijuana and the use of its compounds in the medical field has proliferated in recent years as new research reveals real and potential benefits. The scientific community posits that CBD can reduce anxiety, correct chronic pain, alleviate insomnia, and much more.

Many people have concerns about the safety and efficacy of CBD – and understandably so. The idea of introducing marijuana into modern medicine has had a controversial history indeed. That said, CBD has little to no psychoactive properties and contains less than 0.3% of THC (the mind-altering compound in cannabis).

Research on the subject is still relatively limited, and under no circumstances should any dog be administered THC containing substances unless prescribed by a professional. That said, some studies and anecdotal evidence shows that CBD might help your pup in certain circumstances. The question is: when do they need it and how can you tell?

Let’s jump in.

Treat Your Dog Using CBD Oil

Dogs are generally social creatures. Many of them like to make new friends at the park, sniff out squirrels and other fur-buddies, and hang out with their humans! Though, some dogs may experience anxiety or other forms of discomfort in certain social situations. While it is normal for some dogs to get nervous around new people or seem a tad uncomfortable at the park, it may be the result of an underlying medical condition or anxiety-related problem. In that case, CBD oil may help your pup feel more at ease.

The scientific community also toutes CBD oil as a painkiller, which can be a great alternative to expensive medications. Amongst many other things, CBD oil has been shown to reduce inflammation and relieve arthritis in dogs. It’s even used to treat seizures, cancer, and other conditions.

Properties such as these may help your pet recover from minor injuries quicker. It can also reduce pain perception and slow heart rate.

Health Benefits of Hemp Oil for Dogs

Hemp oil provides all the essential fatty acids (EFAs) your dog needs to survive. EFAs are vital to maintaining healthy skin, coat, and bones; they also help regulate your dog’s metabolism so they burn fat rather than muscle when fetching and tug of war-ing.

It also contains vitamin E, which helps protect against free radical damage to cells, specifically in your pet’s skin.

How to Use CBD Oil for Dogs

There are a great number of CBD products available in the Canadian market. CBD oils for dogs include hemp oil supplements, hemp flower tops, and even hemp seeds. In order to get the benefits of hemp oil without any THC, hemp oil extracts are the right choice (and also the most common).

You can use CBD products via drops or capsules. You can also add it directly into your dog’s food.

The CBD dosage you need will vary depending on the size of your dog. In a 100mg/mL bottle of CBD isolate, you’ll get 20 drops (10mg each) per drop, so one capsule would be enough for one daily dose (20 drops).

Final Thoughts

All this considered, it is important to keep in mind that CBD is a relatively new and understudied treatment for dogs. In order to keep your pet safe, be vigilant in research before using CBD as a medication. Pep & Pup strongly suggests consulting an expert, like a veterinarian, before trying any new medication.
